The Taiwan Film Festival is an annual film festival event to provide a professional showcase platform for Taiwanese and Asian Australian filmmakers to promote their works in Australia. The event will (a) provide local Taiwan residents with the opportunity to enjoy artistic works from their home heritage and culture, and (b) create an artistic platform to expose and promote Taiwanese and Asian Australian cultures to people from other cultural groups.

The 6th Taiwan Film Festival in Australia takes place from 20th July to 20th August, spanning five cities: Sydney, Melbourne, Hobart, Canberra, and Brisbane. With over 30 sessions and 9 Australian Premieres, this festival promises to captivate movie lovers with its diverse selection of films.

Of the festival, Director Corrie Chen states: "The 6th Taiwan Film Festival in Australia is a surreal achievement, as we have not only sustained its success but also expanded to more cities. Over the past 12 months, we have witnessed a rise in the screening of diverse content across various platforms, and we are proud to be a part of this movement. We want to express our heartfelt gratitude to each and every one of you for your support, as well as the generous sponsors who have made this festival possible.”

IML’s Pick

Tomorrow is a Long Time directed by Jow Zhi-Wei

The much-anticipated debut from Jow Zhi-Wei after a series of acclaimed shorts, Tomorrow is a Long Time explores the inter-personal repercussions of structural violence with astonishing acuity and imagination. Chua, a widowed pest exterminator lives on the margins of Singaporean society. Exhausted by his thankless job, he lives day-to-day, without the time or energy to tend to his past or realise how it shapes his present. Instead, Chua’s sensitive son Meng bears the brunt of his father’s frustrations. With stunning and quiet scenes, Zhi-Wei demonstrates the daily brutalities survived by the working class in Singapore without resorting to didacticism. But the writer-director isn’t content with socio-political diagnosis; in a demonstration of Zhi-Wei’s versatility as a filmmaker, Meng—and the film—undergo a fantastical transformation. In the end, Tomorrow is a Long Time demands that its characters’ socio-political conditions be acknowledged. But it also gives them, and us, the space to imagine a world beyond them.
